Windy Springs Farm is owned by Philip and Alison Beebe. We had always dreamed about having our own farm and that dream started taking shape in 2017. We were ready to move from our busy lifestyle in Knoxville and started looking for land. When the opportunity arose to purchase some family land, we took the leap. We bought the land and our new journey began.
We officially moved to our farm in January 2021 and our dream just kept taking shape. Shovel by shovel our market garden started to grow. We spent our days shoveling organic compost to form our raised garden beds. With some real blood, sweat and tears, we saw our dreams coming true, and WE LOVE IT!
Our Farm Values:
Organic practices. Although we are not certified organic, we still use organic practices. We use organic compost and fertilizers to aid in the healthiness of our plants. Non-GMO organic seeds and plants are also purchased when available. On rare occasions, we sparingly use organic OMRI approved natural sprays. The first defense against pest is the mechanical means and barriers. Insect netting is used on a variety of crops while mechanical methods are used on others. In other words, we squash the pest. But sometimes a spray is needed, but it will always be the last resort. Once the pests are identified and invading our crops, the correct spray is chosen. The sprays come from natural ingredients and are used by many organic growers. The 2 sprays we use sparingly on our farm is Pyrethrin, which is derived from Chrysanthemum plants. The other is Neem Oil which is derived from the nuts off a Neem tree. OMRI approved sprays used on our farm do not have residual residue left behind on the plant. These sprays are used directly on the pest. A massive spray down on the plant is ineffective. By implementing these organic practices, it protects our crops, brings a better tasting product to market and helps the environment along the way.
Minimal till gardening. This method is the best for the environment and for you. Minimal till gardening allows us to keep the soil alive and the microbiology thriving. In turn, we can produce healthy plants allowing us to bring you a more delicious and nutritious product.
Cleanliness. Our cleaning methods start with sanitized bins and workspaces. As soon as the produce is harvested, it is checked, washed and stored in clean bins. We never store clean produce in a harvest bin. Most produce is washed before every market, but please wash it again before consumption. Since we do not use any harsh chemical sprays, little bugs and aphids like to hide in the crevices.
Freshness. All of the above values add up to a wonderful fresh product that you get to enjoy. We take pride in picking our produce the days leading up to the market. We hardly allow our produce to sit for weeks before coming to you. Freshness equals higher nutrition which is a better value for you.
We love having a market garden so we can share our wonderful produce with you. Please check out our Market Schedule to see where you can pick up some freshly harvested produce.
